About Studio Variant

The studio. The idea. And where it goes next.

Studio Variant is a precision manufacturing and design studio built around a simple principle:

Start with what needs to exist. Then find the right way to make it.

01 The principle

We don't start with the machine.

We start with what you're trying to achieve. A project might arrive as an idea, or as a component that has already failed twice. Either way the first question is the same one, and it is never about equipment.

  • 01 An idea
  • 02 A broken component
  • 03 An obsolete part
  • 04 A sketch
  • 05 A physical object
  • 06 Existing CAD
  • 07 A product that needs improving
  • 08 Something completely new

The project chooses the process. The process doesn't choose the project.

02 Finding the route

If there's a route, we want to find it.

Some requirements sit neatly inside one process. Others need a combination, a different approach entirely, or a conversation before anybody knows which. Studio Variant would rather investigate a requirement properly than turn it away because it does not match a standard service.

  • Understand what the thing actually has to do
  • Work out what information already exists
  • Establish what still needs designing
  • Identify the routes that could produce it
  • Be straight about the ones that cannot

Studio Variant does not claim to operate every manufacturing process that exists, and no partnership, supplier or outsourcing arrangement is described anywhere on this website. Where a requirement sits outside the studio, we will say so.

Bring the requirement. Studio Variant will help investigate the route.

03 The name

Why Variant?

Variant /ˈvɛːrɪənt/ noun
A form or version of something that differs from another.

Studio Variant's own reading of the word

  • An existing part Reconstructed variant
  • A failed component Reconsidered variant
  • An idea Physical variant
  • A generic object Personalised variant
  • A first prototype Refined variant
  1. V01 What exists.
  2. V02 Reconsider the geometry.
  3. V03 Resolve how it works and how it's made.
  4. V04 Refine the result.

Not “make it nicer” — observe, reconstruct, reconsider, engineer, refine.

The first version doesn't have to be the final one.

04 Studio / today

Digital ideas. Physical outcomes.

Today Studio Variant is a precision manufacturing and design studio based in the New Forest, Hampshire, United Kingdom, working with businesses that need a problem solved and with individual creators who want something made properly.

Where the studio is

New Forest. Hampshire. United Kingdom.

A modern manufacturing studio being built from the New Forest, working with people wherever the project is. Bournemouth, Southampton and Portsmouth are shown for context only.

The way the studio works

Studio Variant is a working studio, not a catalogue. Projects are taken one at a time, the requirement is understood before anything is quoted or made, and the honest answer is given even when the honest answer is that a different route would be better.

The origin

Built from a problem worth solving.

Studio Variant began on the tools. Working in hotel maintenance meant coming across the same things over and over: parts that had failed, items that had been discontinued, components that were difficult to replace, and small physical problems that became unnecessarily complicated.

There should be an easier way to get something like this solved.

That thought became the starting point for Studio Variant. What began as a response to practical maintenance problems pointed at something much wider — a studio built around taking the problem, understanding what is actually needed, and finding an appropriate route towards making it.

The idea grew beyond hospitality. From replacement parts and reverse engineering to bespoke products, prototypes, creator projects and commercial manufacturing, the applications changed. The principle didn't.

Start with the requirement. Find the route. Make it real.

One maintenance problem became a way of thinking.

  • Replacement parts
  • Reverse engineering
  • Bespoke projects
  • Prototypes
  • Custom products
  • Creator projects
  • Commercial manufacturing

05 One system

Different processes. One studio.

Six capabilities sit around the same starting point. Which of them a project uses is decided by the project.

Studio Variant V01

The next version starts with an idea.

The studio is here. If you have something to create, replace, redesign, prototype or manufacture, start there.

This is Studio Variant. And it's only the first version.
